Tangerine Discussion January 22, 2010

Summarize the Erik Fisher Football Dream, and explain how the dream influences the interactions of the family.

The zombie appears in the last paragraph of the entry for Friday, August 18. Re-read the paragraph--what do you think is the meaning of the zombie?

What do you think about Paul's first day of school?

Re-read Monday, August 28. Focus on the main events of that day; Joey; Erik's character traits; sibling relationships. Then, list what you think are the five most important pieces of information you gained. Explain why they are important.

Think back to all that is said about lightning. Are the descriptons realistic? Explain how they add foreshadowing and suspense to the story. Lastly, give your personal response to this part of the story.

Compare (how it is the same) and contrast (how it is different) the relationship between the Costello brothers and the Fisher brothers.

  1. Summarize the Erik Fisher football dream,

What I think about Paul being able to see things that other people over look or just don’t want to see, and he’s one of those people that have had so many things hidden that he doesn’t know anything but to find the truth. This tells me he is not afraid of the truth because it’s something he wants and need.
This might be important to the story because he will be able to seek the truth in his own life. It’s also important because he might make sense of the things other cant, such as the lightning strike at the one house and when the football player got hit, and even why his brother is so happy about it.
I believe that someone else will get hurt and Paul will see it and nobody else will and he will try to tell someone but they won’t believe him because they will think he is trying to get the attention from his brother.

  3. im talking about question #2.
The zombie at the old house in Houston could be all of Paul’s feelings. He feels like his parents don’t understand him and he thinks that he can see things that his parents or other adults cant and wont. The zombie could also stand for all the secrets his parents are keeping from him. Later on in the story he starts to forget how he went blind and he never remembered looking at solar eclipses but his parents told him that is what had happened to him when he was five. His family seems to have lots of serious secrets that they have been keeping from Paul for a long, long time.

i think he is so not being treated fair, and that this book is a little bit crull to the little boy paul.
the school is a bit unfair and a little more help then he needs they need to only help him when he needs help

  5. I think his first day of school was and at the same time because he had some teachers that were nice and some that are mean. But he had some friends that are very nice to him and like him for who he is and that he is a good soccer player. by: kennedy reeves

  6. Meaning of the zombie,

I think the zombie in their house in houston might have been a bad experiences he has had while living there with his family maybe an accident happend maybe someone got in trouble or something but he seems pretty happy about leaving that zombie in the house.

  7. 2) What do I think the meaning of the zombie is in the story Tangerine?
I think the zombie stands for all of the bad memories that happed while he lived in the old house. Like when people where smashing mailboxes and he thought they wher trying to hit him with a baseball bat.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Im talkin about #2

i think the zombie is his memories of houston cause he seems to not have very good memories of texas. Like the person who tried to hit him with a bat. And the secrets his parents are keeping from him. Also he doesnt have a good relationship with his brother.

  9. For Question Number 2-
I think the zombie is the nightmares and ghosts of his past. I think this because I mentions in the begining of the book it said something simulsr to "the keys were locked in and the zombie locked out," I then thought it meant that All his memories were locked out and someone else would have theirs locked in.

The story makes me think about how some people are so self absorbed with themselves, and only care about what happens to them and their dreams. For example when the kid gets killed by lightning and the brother comes home and. like everything is fine and he makes fun if what happened.
It also makes me think about what Erik did to Paul to make Paul so scared. I also think it’s sad and scary when Paul says “ I would feel safer if Erik died but that means the secrets would die to.” This makes you get deeper in your thoughts and the book.

  14. Im talking about question #11.
The story makes me think about Paul’s brother and all the secrets the family has kept from him for so long. For example the older brother had just watched one of his team mates get electrocuted and he watched his friend die. But when Erick pulled up with in a truck he got out and told his mother what had happened with no emotion. He laughed as he talked to the mother and Paul. That makes me think of how selfish some people are. In the book when Paul said he would feel better if his brother died and took his part of the story with him it makes you think about what Erick had done. And how bad it must have been, in order for Paul’s parents to have kept the secret from him for so many years.

I think paul notices things that other poeple don't he takes his time to notice what is going on around him. i htink it is importan because even though evreyone thinks he can't see well but he still notices things.don't know what to make for a prdition.

  19. Here are rest of the questions...

    7. Describe how Paul feels about himself at the beginning of September. What has brought Paul to this new feeling about himself? Is this feeling realistic? Why or why not? What advice can you give him?

    8. Paul notices many things about the natural world that other characters seem to overlook. What does this tell you about him? Why might this be important in the story--make predictions.

    9. What do you enjoy about the book so far--characters, action, writing style...? Why?

    10. Is there anyone in the story with whom you'd like to be friends? Explain.

    11. What does the story make you think about so far?

    12. What can you learn about writing from Edward Bloor?

    ReplyDelete
  20. He has had good day on his first dat of school

  21. Melissa you need more detail on how the are cruel to Paul. make sure spelling is corrert.

  22. 6. When you compare the fisher and Costello brothers there are some similarities. There is the fact that they are both in high both in the football team. The similarities between Joey and Paul are that they are both in middle school and they are both in the middle school soccer team the differences are that Joey's brother is dead and Paul brother isn’t. There aren’t really any differences except maybe that Paul’s name is Paul and Joey’s name is Joey. There is a difference between Erik and Mike. Erik is in the limelight or in Erik’s football dream and mike is no longer playing football or anything.
    9. Why I like this book is because of the suspense and because of the plot and the story. I like how weird and unexpected things happen. The characters are cool and very detailed. The book is very detailed and very descriptive. I can’t stop reading it. I think it is shocking that mike died. That is another reason why I like the book; it has a lot of emotion. I think that the author is a very good author. He uses good word choice and good setting choice.

  25. I think that he liked his new school but he was mostly interested in the soccer. When he saw the trophy case he was very interested because he loves soccer. After school he went and saw the soccer team practicing and he went and played goalie and he blocked all of the kicks that they kicked at him

    ReplyDelete
  26. 3) Pauls first day is diffrent than most peoples because the kids at his new school seem depressed and not happy to be there. people at his old school were more exited to be there. also it was different because when he went to his 2nd period class he had to have a girl come to show him around because of his eye sight, at his old school he didnt have to have anyone go with him around the school.

The zombie might be the bad memories from that house or maybe the, "monster under the bed" and Paul is probable happy to leave the old house of theirs and probable doesn’t want to go back

    ReplyDelete
  33. Paul notices many things about the natural world that other characters over look. What does this tell you about him? why might this be important in the story-make some predictions.

It tells you that Pauls a kid that doesnt look at things and not care. Paul looks at things and thinks about if they're good or bad in anyones life or in his. It might allow him to get back to his normal life playing soccer and living with his family. Paul might get asked to be the goalie for the soccer team and get more friends around the school and be remembered as something other than Mars maybe somthing cooler like Laza beam!

When Mike dies eric start the dream for real and everyone ells can see it.The family seems to care more about Erics dreams then Pauls they are constently talking about Erics foot ball carear espesaly the dad. he rarly thinks about paul they work so hard for Eriks dream that other famly isues are dismised.

Good ideas about the Erik Fisher Football dream, especially how it affects Paul.

  41. i think that the zombie is the story or secret about how he realy went "blind"

  42. What does the story make you think about the story so far.

It makes me think about the good things and bad things in life. It makes me feel good about my life because I don't have to wear nerdy thick glasses like Paul. It Remindes me not to look at a solar eclipes without protection. Its like sex make sure you use protection. When you step into the shoes of a person with big glasses makes you think about the little things in life.

    ReplyDelete
  43. One of the things I really like about the book is how Paul is able to understand so much that no one else sees. This reminds me of my favorite book when I was a kid--Harriet the Spy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, I think Paul really gets left behind the Erik Fisher Football Dream, all the time. Erik never has to do any housework, and Paul is always helping his mom...even so, Paul is a really strong kid, and really knows how to make himself happy.

I also really like how he notices so much about nature, like the osprey and the smell of the tangerine groves. I do that same thing.

  47. Question 5

The lightning in the story is described really well. I think the lightning is not described realistically. Lightning is not a living, thinking thing so it doesn't know where to strike. Though I do think that the writer used the lightning as a way to express the anger or other feelings about cutting down and burning the tangerine trees. For example the story about the house that got hit by lightning three times, all at four o'clock. The lightning definitely adds plenty of suspense, for example when mike gets killed by the lightning it makes you wonder if or who will be struck next.Lighning helps you foreshadow because the lightning makes Paul, and other characters act and think certain things. As a reader the lightning added so much to the story. You don't know always what the lightning stands for or means but it does get you thinking about what could happen next.

  48. the erik fisher football dream was erik being the best football player and any one who got in it would be popular to. His dad was to small to play football so he is pushing erik to become pro. His dad ignors paul all the time when it comes to football. erik kicks a football 50 yards. The mom is very serios about practice when lighting was around. So they changed the time to early morning.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I’m going to do question 5 first.
It’s the one about the lightning about the lightning I think it was described very well. It was realistic, like you were there. Also the lightning adds a lot of subspace. It’s almost as if you’re waiting or wondering who is going to get hurt next. And my personal response is that think the lightning will come back and hurt someone again. But I have a question, why do they always have storms at 4:00 every day?

    ReplyDelete
  50. all that is said about the lightning, i think that it is really really funny, because that one house was struck by lightning 3-4 times, and they ahvent moved yet, but at the same time its sad, bucause lots of people have been killed like Mike, that girl that got off the bus and was struck by lightning, the cross crountry runner (same thing happened) and those other football players from tangerine high. lightning is the main accsidental killings

I think Paul had a good first day at school for the most part except that he was mad to have a guide because of the IEP. But he makes a deal with the girl so he does not have her as a guide. For the most part it was a good first day for him because he got to all his classes and got to them fast and made some friends. I don’t think he likes his science teacher but likes his home room teacher

  55. Question 8
It’s the one about Paul noticing natural thing that everyone else seems to over looks. I think it because nothing is wrong with his eye sight. I bet his parents are just too over protective. Or his eye sight really is bad and he can only see with those glasses. The second answer is probably it.

  56. Question 1

Erik Fisher's football dream is the most important thing fisher family right now. Mr. Fisher is OBSESSED with football and how good his son is at the game. The football dream is most important, so anything and everything is below it in the list of importance. Erik Fisher will do anything to complete his dream. Nothing can stand in his way, not even the most of outrageous of players. The family is deeply affected by all the choices made based on the Erik Fisher football dream. Paul is especially fed up with Erik always being a star and getting all the attention. Erik Fisher and his football dream is starting to become annoying.

Where is Paul's mom in this picture?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Eric is one character I could ponder on for a very long time. Although he is not fully described yet, I can get a very good picture of him in my mind. He really doesn’t seem to care about anyone else, I was very upset when he was laughing a Mike for dying. For a split second, I wanted to scream at Eric for being such a heartless guy. But, I knew I couldn’t. He is a character in a book, and If I ever met someone so self absorbed that laughed at another person’s death, It would take all I had to keep from slapping him right in the face. He really has no respect for people. I wouldn’t be surprised if he turned out to be the guy that tried to kill Paul!

    ReplyDelete
  61. 1. i think eriks football dream pushes paul out of the picture... like when mr.costello was over at there house and paul and him where talking and when erik pulled in to the drive way he said something about the attention will switch over to erik like it always does...

    9. i like the way edward bloor describes objects like their house he didnt spend a page and a half on just the house... like most books i read he just says so much but so little at the same time. I also like how the book talks about soccor alot.... I LOVE SOCCOR!! its like the only sport i can play... haha... soooo yea

  66. This is Megan-One-Mike death. This is important because it shows that afternoon practice if very dangerous. With the goal post that high, and Tangerine being the town in the US most hit by lighting, I was very surprised that the coach was so set on having afternoon practice, especially when he knew exactly when the lightning would hit. That not only showed he didn’t care about his team, but he was a very, VERY stubborn man.

So far the story makes me think about what it would be like to lose a brother or a friend. It also makes me think about how bad it would be to be made fun of and have my mom be so protective about how I get around a school, get kicked off a soccer team because of my mom being so protective

This is the second time I've read Tangerine, and I always really get caught by the lightning/football practice comment, too. I think Paul's mom is a bit extreme, but I also can't understand why, from the school's perspective, Paul can't play soccer because of "insurance," yet the football coach can run practice at lightning strike time evey day...

They are a small town that nobodys really knows about except for the occational lighting-killing-a-person, or Stink Hole, but other than that, they seem like a small crumb on a big, clean table that no ones seems to care about.

  81. Emma
I don't know how far you have read, but here is a few things that show that Paul’s' mom does NOT 'go with the flow
1.She had an hysteria attack when Paul smelt smoke on their first day in Tangerine.
2.Although she may encourage the Erik Fisher Football Dream, she would do anything to keep her precious son safe, even if that means ruining her husbands dream for his son
3.She called almost every parent at the middle school after Mike died, to hold a kind of 'strike' against afternoon football practice.
And, What I think, is that Paul’s mom somewhat used his eyesight as a advantage to get a tour of the school, and you could tell that she really wanted to go into Paul’s new school and get a tour as well.
    What do you all think?

    ReplyDelete
  82. on #1 I think the family is way to caught up in the erik fisher football dream and i think the whole family lives vicariously through erik and dont pay enough attention to paul. before they know it paul could be the next big star but they all just live through erik, cant be happy with what paul is doing being a vision impaired goalie on the most competitive soccer team in all of tangerine county and half to talk about erik in almost every conversation so the whole time i think thats what his parents all wanted to be a star kids so now they can live their dream though erik. But i think Paul doesnt really want the "Paul Fisher soccer dream" because he is the outkast the one who plays soccer instead of football and has a vision problem also i think paul is too humble to get into the erik fisher football dream.

    ReplyDelete
  83. #2 i belive the meaning of the zombies is that all the zombies getting locked in the house when they leave is all bad memories that have happened in that house. Like when there was a car speeding down the street and they were smashing mailboxes with a bat while they were hanging out of the window. then they saw paul so they went after him and then just as they were about to hit him in the head with the bat paul ducked. he came home and thought it was erik but erik was sitting at the kitchen table
Also when the family tells paul that he looked right into a solar eclipse and that he why he is vision impaired.

  84. 6. How it is different between the Costello brothers and the Fisher brothers, is that Joey and Mike are on better terms than Paul and Erick. They are the same because of the football stars Erick and Mike. The soccer stars Paul and Joey. Mike did not try to kill Joey the way Erick tried to kill Paul so they are different. Mike was not as mean as Erick. So that makes them different. When Mike was killed by lightening. All Erick and Author laughed at him. That is how they are different.

  85. #3)I beleive part of the story because he probably did play soccer and he was probably really good at it, but I dont beleive that lightnig struck over bye there house every night and that it smokes really badlly every day and looks like there is a fire. I also dont beleive that he could get every ball that they kicked at him.

    ReplyDelete
  86. #9) I think that there soccer team is really good because Paul is a really good goally and most of there team can kick really good, besides the people that Paul practiced with the first day of school.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I think the sink hole event adds that Paul can see. it shows the people that douted him that he can do somthing great. I think s far it has ben my favoret part of the book. it adds action and help you relize that the book is not as boring as I first believed it was.

    ReplyDelete
  88. 9) i think that the staters in the game are good they can kick and pass well. Having Paul on there team helps alot also because he is a pritty good goally.so he can contribute to the team. so overall other then the "toe stubers" they are a farlly good team. they personalty wise are ok people to because they are not to mean to Paul.

    ReplyDelete
  89. 3) i think Paul is a reliable narrator because you see what he thinks not what others think. another hint is that the story is rightin in his diary form.

    ReplyDelete
  90. 3) i do think paul is a reliable narrorator. he also makes the story sound more realistic and i think thats how i would view the story.

    ReplyDelete
  91. 9> i think that the new soccer team is good. i also think that paul makes it better eventhough the team is good at soccer.

    ReplyDelete
  92. In Tangerine there are two sets of brothers. They are Mike and Joey, and Erick and Paul. Mike and Joey have a pretty good relationship as brothers. They like each other and respect each other. There are not many details about mike and joeys relationship because mike dies a little after the beginning of the story. But when mike dies in the book, Joey comes and starts crying and saying give me his shoes( probably for a reminder of him). That shows how joey loves his big brother mike. Mike was probably nice, or enough for his brother to love him so much. Now to Erick and Paul. These brothers have a very unhealthy and bad relationship as brothers. First of all they hate each other, and cant stand each other. Well enough to have rooms so separate from one another. Also Paul is a little jealous of Erick having much attention from dad. Erick treats Paul very horrible. He beats him, teases him, and made him have bad vision. But sadly, Paul’s mother and father never notice how mean Erick is, and don’t see what Paul sees. But, in both sets of brothers, there is one who plays football, and one who plays soccer. Overall both sets of brothers have a different feeling to the other and can probably change.
