Tangerine Blog #2, January 28, 2010

Choose two questions (or more) and write a detailed answer to each one--a full paragraph, 8-10 sentences minimum, about half a page each.

Type your answers into the blog comment box.

Proofread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then, copy and paste what you wrote into a word document. Print the word document, and hand it in.

Once you have posted your answers, discuss what other students are posting.

Keep your discussion focused on the book.

Questions for pages 77-155

1. Look at some of the big choices Paul or any other character has made. Briefly explain the choice, and tell the page number. Then, explain 1) why the character had to make the choice he or she did; 2) the immediate consequences of the choice; 3) the long term consequences of the choice. Remember, the consequences is the outcome--it can be positive or negative. Also, choices can have more than one consequence.

2. Discuss the sink hole even...don't just summarize it, but talk about what it adds to the story, and makes you think about, why it's important to Paul, etc.

3. Is Paul a reliable narrator, meaning, do you believe the story he is telling, and his view of things?

4. At the end of Thursday, September 14, Paul states, "You're either at the center of Dad's world, or you're nowhere. There is no in between. It's the Dad era now." Explain what you think Paul means.

5. Who or what is influencing most of Paul's choices in this section of the book? Do you think he's doing the right thing? Explain.

6. Talk about the sports action in the story...what do you have to say about it? What does it add to the story? Explain.

7. Respond to Paul's change of schools. Before you write, look back over the story from Monday, September 18 to Friday, September 29.

8. Compare and contrast the two middle schools--what does Paul gain or lose by moving? Go beyond soccer.

9. What do you think of the new soccer team?

10. Analyze Tuesday, October 3. Why does Paul feel the need to write about something now that he did not feel the need to write about it when it happened? What does this writing show us about Joey's character? Do Joey's reactions seem realistic--why or why not?

  1. I personally do find Paul to be a reliable narrator. I think he is an honest kid, who watches closely everything that goes on around him. I trust his perceptions on his family. When I read how Erik acts in different situations, and how Paul's parents act, I can see why Paul thinks what he does of each character.

I think a really good example is on page 94, when Paul tries to convince his parents that he should be allowed to transfer schools. After he tell them why he wants to go, he narrates: "I looked at Mom, and knew I had her. She couldn't resist me, not after what had happened with Coach Walski. I looked at Dad, and he seemed puzzled. Not angry, just puzzled. He said, "What's this about me never paying attention to you?" The paragraph continues on after this, but I really think it shows how Paul is a reliable narrator because he knows how his parents will act, and he is not trying to be sneaky or manipulate them. He's just being an honest kid and telling his story.

  2. My post about Paul as a narrator is 186 words. Yours can be around 100 words, but should be a paragraph, not a line or two.

  10. #2 i think paul had a lot of courage pulling all those people out of the portables. I also think he gained a lot of courage and self respect and now he can be not so afraid of erik and people bigger then him. but saying that, I think joey didnt, and now paul will stop hanging out with him because he is friends with all the tough guys. So joey will just find new friends. Also i think paul was friends with him and said come to this school and when he got there it was not as great as he thought it would be

  14. 5. Most of the things Paul chooses to do are influenced by the tangerine middle soccer team. I think he is doing the right thing. He seems better off. His friends stand up for him at tangerine middle. Paul is also more important on this soccer team. He stands in for people instead of being a water boy.

  15. #3 Paul is a rieliable narrator and that he keeps the reader updated in his journals and doesn't go days and days without making an intrie. I belive the story because he's making it sound realistic besides saying that lightning has fellings. I belive his view cause he just moved to a new place and he doesn't know what its like and how the people are.

The sinkhole accident adds suspense to the story because you don’t know if someone is going to get stuck in the portables and not be able to get out. Or if someone is going to fall into the sinkhole and not be able to get back up. It also a heroic touch to it when all of those kids are helping the other ones get out of the buildings. It also makes you think that there still is good people in the world that would risk their own lives to save someone else’s. when they get back inside and the kid comes over to clean Paul’s’ glasses and congratulates him I think that means the world to him. I do think it’s unfair when the other kids get to be on the news and not him. That makes me want to get in the story and stand up for him. This Is what I feel about the whole sinkhole accident.

  17. question # 8
I think that paul will be losing some new friends that he made in florida. and he would lose a good soccer team. the good thing is that he can live a normal life again without the strange things.

    question # 6
I think that it would be boring if they just talked and talked all the time the sports add a little excitment paul and his brother both like sports but differnt ones like paul likes soccer and erik likes football

    ReplyDelete
  18. Q-9
i think they are ok but i think that paul does not like them

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think the sports add alot to the story because paul is really good as soccer and his parents dont really know that. mabye his mom does but I dont even think that his dad knows he exists because he is to obsessed with the erik fisher football dream. But i think its ironic because Erik gets all the praise when he is a placekicker and paul is a goalie which is way more important. i think they like Erik more just because he doesnt have a vision problem.

  20. I think that when the sink hole event happened right in front of Paul and his friends Paul was shocked and didn’t know what to do. But then when portable 19 started to sink below ground level and all those kids were still inside he snapped out of being shocked. Like when Paul gathered that group of kids together and helped get the kids out of the building. He put himself in harm’s way and climbed into the hole and they pulled each kid out step by step. The whole time Paul couldn’t see because every time he slipped mud gathered onto hiss goggles. In the end only a little bit of kids had miner injures and it would have been even worse if Paul didn’t o what he did. The sink hole incident brings suspense and a little bit of action into the story. And know Paul thinks of himself sort of like a hero for saving those people lives.

  21. 4.When Paul’s dad says your your the either the center of dads world or your nowhere. I think that Paul thinks that his dad thinks that Erick is more important than him because he does football and Paul does soccer.

  22. 9. I think the new soccer team is way better than the old soccer team. Why I think that is because they win more. They let Paul play. They are better sports. They work together as a team. That is why I think the new soccer team is awesome!!

  26. Question #6:
I think it adds a little bit of action to the story because it would be boring if they were just sitting there talking about stuff like pinnaples i mean ... that would be boring.
honestly the book isn't my type of book.\

    Question #8:
I think that he was kinda happy to move to tangerine because he would be moving away from all of the wierd things that happend in texas.
But i also think that he was sad that he was moving away from texas because he might have friends over there and he doesnt want to lose his friends but like always parents dicide even if their idea is compleatly pointless.

I think that in sink hole event has a good thing to add to the story to make it seem like it was a big deal saving about 20 kids lives. It was great judgement to help let the reader know that paul helps people and does not let them get caught in a sinkhole event i think about all the kids who have lost their lives or could been stuck in the mud or about what if that happened to our school or had a big sinkhole under our track or had 20 kids sinking to the ground. I think Paul did a great thing to help them.

  30. Q-9
if paul does not like the team than thats ok but i really dont like them, i think that they are not leting him play that much and i just dont think that they are being that nice to him and paul thinks so too. they are to mean but they play soccer well and they think that paul will not help win when he can and hopekly will.

    ReplyDelete
  31. i think the people at his old school is treating him unfair. just cuz he has glasses dosent mean they should treat him like that. they should be nice to him. his mother is suuc a witch she should listen to him and not be so mean. his mom does not understand how he feels deep deep down inside. and there might be monsters under his bed bet his mom wont save him

    ReplyDelete
  32. #2)
The sinkhole accident was a weird but needed twist in the story. It changed what Paul thinks about himself. Now that he has saved some people he now feels like he did a good thing. The whole sinkhole thing was a weird event but it did change the story so it is important. What Paul now thinks of himself is that he is now more confident and feels braver. I think that the story is going to change in a way. Something that will also change is Paul’s behavior. I think now Paul will act different.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 4. When his dad says that statement Paul probably thinks that if you don’t do what his dad wants then you are practically nobody in his world. Like the Erick fisher foot ball dream Paul feels like his dad cares more about his older brother Erick more than he cares about Paul. Paul thinks that if he doesn’t do what his dad wants or would like everyone to do those people don’t exist because it’s his dads era now. The dad makes it so Paul feels like his dad doesn’t care about what he does or doesn’t care about him.

. I think he didn’t feel the need to write about it when it happened because it truly didn’t bother him until afterwards. What Joey did was wrong but at the same time it shows how much anger he’s been holding back. It also shows what he has been hiding inside since his brother died. It might also make him feel since his brother is gone that he need to do everything his brother did and would do. I think he also lashed out at Paul for what Paul’s brother said to him that afternoon when he was there. His reaction seems very realistic because I might have done the same thing if I was in his shoes. At the same time it doesn’t seem realistic because when you have been following his character through the book it’s just not something you could see coming. This is what I think of this part of the book.

I think that the new soccer team is great for paul because he is learning new things and learning how to win and also just plain have fun. This new is a cocky team this team is all about winning or losing and this team is a perfect team for paul because he was the number one goalie in soccer in houston texas

  38. 9. i think the new soccor team is mean they might hurt the poor guy then he will be hurt....he might be the best player in the team but then again he might be the worst player ever.... his brother is mean

I think the new soccer team is good. I think they are going to find out that Paul told the principal that it was the guys who played soccer at Tangerine middle that trashed the freak show. The team are good but some of the people who are in the team are a little too into the game. Like Victor, he is good but i think he shows off too much. Like the time where they were going to interview the girls on the soccer team victor turned the spotlight on himself. I think the team might win because they are good but i still think that some of the players show of too much.

  40. 1. When Paul decided to change schools from Lake Windsor Middle school to Tangerine Middle School. He made the choice mainly because he couldn’t play soccer at Lake Windsor because of his disability, his eyes. But at the first practice at Tangerine, the coach said he could play but he would have to play “backup”, but that didn’t bother him. All he wanted to do was to play soccer and not have anyone worry about his eyes. And by joining to Tangerine team he got to play and got to be on a champion team and got to make the winning save in the goal.

  43. Question #3
I think Paul is a very reliable character. From what he says, and how he is treated, AI almost feel sorry for him. I don't think he has any reason to exaggerate a story. All the things he says don’t need to be exaggerated. I believe what he says because he seems like a trustworthy guy. I mean, He hasn't done anything for me not to dislike him. Paul seems sweet, and I believe every word that he says. Why would he lie, besides getting some attention from his parents, but he doesn't seem like that kind of guy. He might lie if it was absolutely necessary, but right now, he has been a very trustworthy guy.

  44. Q#8
Compare and contrast the two middle schools- what does Paul gain or lose by moving. Go beyond soccer.

I think some of the people at tangerine middle are like the people at his old school like Victor is like Gino. Its different at tangerine middle because people are a lot tougher than lake windsor middle school. He loses a lot of friends and respect from his other friends.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Question 9
The sink hole event it really was Important to the story. It gave Paul a sense that he wasn’t totally useless. Saving the kids showed him that he can do things and be good at it. It also adds to the story, now everyone is on edge from the event. They won’t calm down and that adds some interest to the story. And as for what I think of it, I liked the break from real life a got some action.

  46. Question 3

I think Paul is a very reliable narrator. Even though it is from his point of view, his point of view seems to be non-exaggerated and the truth. I believe the story he is telling because of how all the things that happen are realistic and put together really well. I think it helps to have the book in a diary form because he kind of just journals what he does each day. How Paul views things is probably not how I would view things, but it's nice to see stuff the way he does. Being a narrator is a good job for Paul.

I think the soccer team is good because they play to win and nothing else. But i dont think the girls on the soccer team are big news. Victor is kinda of mean to the Paul and Joey but gets nicer to Paul but stays mean to Joey. Joey is pretty bad at soccer but the rest of the team seems to what they are doing. At their first game the ref was really bad at his job and the home team would have had alot of penaltys.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Q#5
Who or what is influencing most of Pauls choices in this section of the book? What does it add to the story.

I think Victor and his friends are influencing Paul to do things he normally wouldn't do. Like peer pressure. It adds conflict to the story between Joey and Paul. It also adds some faith that Paul will act tougher in his life later instead of being pushed around by his brother and other bullies.

  58. Question #9
I think Paul’s new soccer team is very….. interesting. The first time Paul met them, I was worried that they would beat up poor Paul! But, they turned out to be somewhat nice people. The first game was what really got me fascinated with them. You would think from the way the other team was acting, that they would of got into a big, huge, fight! But, surprisingly, they stayed fairly calm. No one got into a gigantic fight with each other (well, besides Paul and that big guy, but that wasn’t really as bad as it could have been.) I think Victor is also misunderstood.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Question 9
The new soccer team is very different from the last one. Everybody is in a click or group. They think of themselves as “cool” kids. Paul is so eager to just play soccer he doesn’t mind how he’s treated or what mean things are said to him. I think Paul likes the new soccer team better because he fits in. He is part of the “cool” kid group. Overall the soccer players on the new team are really good at teamwork and cooperation.

Pauls change of school changed his life and how he acts. It changed his life by being himself and acting how he wants and not being picked on. Well he gets picked one but hes used to it.

  64. Brandon, I don't think that the Soccer team is influencing Paul? Why do you say that? What is you defense?

  66. Just how they make him feel like an outsider and he tries to fit in by being a jerk.

  67. 1)What my opinion is on the whole sinkhole situation, is that the construction people where really not smart to build the school on a sinkhole. Why didn't they think about that? Or at least examine it a little! Since his mom did that hole handy cap miss hap, this is a chance for Paul to be on a soccer team this year, because they have a soccer team too, and he cares about soccer, and this is his chance to really be on a team. so now he's happy. And now that Joe is going to that school now. That just makes it even better. Speaking of Joe, ink that it would be supper, supper hard to go to school at 1pm and get out at 7pm. That is just wrong. That would be SUPPER hard for me.

    9) I think that Paul’s soccer team is really good, but they are a little aggressive. But they are really good players, they used to be mean to Paul. Now they are nice and he is making friends, which I think that it is SUPER good for him, because his friends are supper important. Their first soccer game was just WOW. I can't believe that she got mad and punched that kid! Didn’t see that coming!

I think the sink hole event was good for Paul it made him believe he's not affraid to do whats right. He cares a lot about people and thats a good trait. It was also good because he got to move to a different school that would let him play soccer so the sink hole was good in a way for him. It was bad because it caused a lot of trouble for his dad but also got a better job for his dad.

  71. Emma-What do you wish me to say? Victor is misunderstood, because you said yourself that he needed consoling. EVERYONE has jumped to sudden conclusions about Victor. 83. 2. well i think that paul was in shock at first but then he relized what was hapening so he ran over to help, when i was reading about what happend i thought what if i was one of the kids that was trapped inside one of the portables, that would be really scary.

    9. when victor and all the other people came into the cafateria i didnt like how he reacted to paul sitting with theresa so i dont really like victor. I also find it kinda annoying how the other people always repeat what victore says so i dont really like the team but in the end i know they will all be friends

  87. honestly from the bottom of my feet to the top of my head (and you all know how long that is) I really, really enjoy this book. If you just skim it and don't really give it a chance, that you will probably think that it is SUPER boring, but i don't think so... If you get into it like me and a few other people. Then you can REALLY get something out of this book.

  88. Lexi, I totally Agree! I mean, tons of people aren't really giving this book a chance. They jump to sudden conclusions just because there are some slow parts. All books have there slow parts. Parts where they give you information about a certain character. If you give this book a chance, and don't skip, you could really enjoy it. Or, you may not like it just because it doesn't interest you. That's okay. Everyone has a right to dislike something-whether it's a book or a movie or some kind of food, we all have the right to say 'That's not my favorite' or 'I didn't like it' But You should read the whole thing before reading the first few chapters, and saying 'I hate it' I personally, enjoy it.
